I’m not going to lie and say taking family photos with babies is easy. It’s actually really difficult. Rarely do you get a baby that is easy going and cooperative – they don’t want to stay still, they look where you don’t need them to, they cry or all of the above! Regardless of how difficult it is, I continue to take on these challenges head on and continue to grow and perfect my craft as a photographer. It’s honestly so rewarding when you get such positive responses from clients after they receive their photos. Below are some tips that I’ve found useful for myself when taking photos of babies.

  1. A well-fed and napped baby is best. Ensure that the baby has had his/her nap before they come for the photoshoot. Make sure that they have a full tummy as well so they are’t #hangry
  2. Be readyBe behind the camera and ready to snap the photo at all times. When there is a group of people in the photo, ensure that everyone is ready and looking at you. Once the baby looks your way you literally have within seconds to capture the shot so by having everyone else ready for the photo you have a higher chance of capturing that perfect shot.
  3. Bring distractions. It can be baby’s favourite toy or something bright, loud, colourful or all of the above. You want to have items you can use to get the baby’s attention to look your way and/or make them smile. Some items I’ve used include rattles, plush animals, snack jars, and clothing. Have an assistant use these items to get the baby’s attention.
  4. Have fun. It’s not the easiest job posing a baby so most of the time its just fun to go with it. Have fun with the photoshoot and just let the baby be himself .Don’t try to get them into certain positions so much as they will eventually get very agitated with you.

My latest family photo session included (yet of course) another baby. Meet Liam. (I have a sweet spot for mixed ethnicity babies – I think they are oh so adorable!) I hope these tips help you with you baby photography skills.

Meet Mia.

This nine-month old baby girl hates grass, loves blowing bubbles and is the just simply the sweetest thing ever! To say that Mia is loved by those around her is probably the biggest under-statement. You can see and feel the love and joy that she brings to each and every person in her life. The second everyone sees her, their eyes just light up and there is this happiness that just can’t be described. Mia is blessed “to not only have one but three men in [her] life to love [her], guide [her] and protect [her]” as her mother, Anna, says. When approached by Anna to capture these moments for their family, she had emphasized how this was more for Mia’s uncles than anything else. It warms my heart so much to see these acts of selflessness especially in light of all the current events around  the globe.

It was such an honour to be able to capture these moments for Mia and her family.

…And love is love, is love, is love is love

Happy 1st Birthday LXT!

Happy 1st Birthday LXT!

Christopher George Latore Wallace, better known by his stage names The Notorious B.I.G., Biggie, or Biggie Smalls, was an American rapper. He is consistently ranked as one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time. – Wikipedia

Well let me introduce you to The Notorious LXT, Lincoln, or Linc, he’s an adorable one year old yet to discover his passion in life. For now he’s okay with sipping on ’em bottle and looking real cute doing it. He is ranked number one in his family as everyone is so in love with him! When we think of a first year old’s birthday party we probably think of cake smashes, cute themes and you know the usual balloons and what have you. Linc’s parents are definitely not ones to stick to the status quo – clearly. They hosted a Biggie-themed birthday party for their one-year old. He wont remember it anyways right? So why not make it fun for everyone! I don’t even want to begin to think of the countless hours that Clem and Victor put into the party – all the little details down to the microphone name tags on the loot bags!

Part of the celebrations was a traditional Asian first birthday grab. For those whose never been to an Asian first birthday, what it basically entails is a number of items placed before the birthday child. He/she would then crawl towards an item and grabs it. Whichever item they grab is said to be an indication of what their future career will be. Some items include a stethoscope, a book, a pen and a microphone symbolizing a doctor, an educator, a writer and an entertainer respectively. To add to the fun was a gif photo booth and plenty of colouring sheets, puzzles and mazes for the kids. It was definitely a party to remember.

Wishing the happiest of birthdays to you, LXT! One day you will look back on this day and probably wonder who this Biggie dude was.

Family Photos- John & Jenna – Maple, Ontario

Can’t believe its been exactly two years since I took John and Jenna’s maternity photos for their first son, Jack. Two years later, their family has grown once more with the welcoming of their new baby boy, Josh. I was beyond honoured and thrilled when John approached me to take family photos for his entire family with his sister’s family and parents. It was a bright and sunny July day in Maple, Ontario and taking photos at 11am wasn’t the ideal scenario due to the harsh shadows the sun would cause but we managed to find a bit of partial shade and made it work. Trying to keep three toddlers and a baby content is definitely a challenge but working quickly and bribing them with Teddy Grahams and episodes of Paw Patrol seems to do the trick. Highlight of the day was definitely chasing the kids around the park with my camera. The kids were definitely in their ‘natural habitat’ and it made for some pretty awesome candids. I also got a taste of what my next few years will be like with a toddler…This should be fun!

Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father’s Day!

This Father’s Day I wanted to send a special shout out to my dearest husband who’s celebrating his first ever Father’s Day as a dad. We welcomed our baby boy, Evan, into our lives on December 23rd, 2016 and its been quite a rollercoaster ride ever since. To say our lives has been forever changed is definitely an understatement. It’s true when they say you do not appreciate your parents enough until you have children of your own but I think you also do not realize how much you appreciate your significant other until you’ve started raising a child together. Now that Evan is almost six months old and I’m looking back at the first six weeks of parenthood, I’m so grateful Alan is the way he is. Alan has always been the more patient and calm one between the two of us and this was definitely a huge plus especially during the first couple sleepless weeks of adjusting to parenthood.

To Alan, I know I definitely do not say it enough but I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for all that you do for Evan and I. Really cannot image being able to do what I do without you by my side – through all my rants and b!tching and all! Evan will soon learn how lucky he is to have you as his father and such a great role model to look up to! We love you!

To my dad, I know we don’t always see eye to eye but at the end of the day I know you’ll always have my back and for that I’m grateful. Thanks for being there for Evan when I need a night to not be a mom, for trekking all the way to my house to help me with yard work and mini renovation projects I’m always coming up with.

Thanks daddy for cleaning my poopy diapers when mommy doesn’t want to, for rocking me to sleep in the middle of the night, for warming up my formula at all hours of the night, for making me laugh but most of all for taking care of mommy so she can take of me. I love you, daddy!

Love,

Evan

Here’s to all the grandfathers, fathers, dads, uncles, and acting father figures out there! Happy Father’s Day!

Christmas Family Portraits – Milton, Ontario | Karen Tran Photography

Puffy coats are starting to come back out. Snow is starting to make its return and the weather is starting to drop sub-zero. We’re all bracing ourselves for the next installment of the beloved Canadian winter. The very last week of nice fall weather has come and gone. I took that opportunity to shoot an adorable couple and their fur baby for their Christmas family portraits.

Decked out in an appropriate red colour theme – complete with plaid, earmuffs and even reindeer antlers for Jasper, the bulldog – the Fall backdrop was perfect for this family portrait session.
