It was the perfect September day for a wedding! I was a little worried since the weather had been getting cooler recently but the sun was shining and there was no dark cloud in sight for Su-Min and Edric’s big day. We started our day at their condo in downtown Toronto where the lovely bride got ready with her bff and sister. On the other side of town, Edric was at his parent’s house getting ready with his entourage and close relatives. Who said you can’t start a party at 10AM in the morning?

We then headed to Canvas Event Venue for the ceremony and reception.  Everything was DIY by the lovely bride but it definitely did not look that way! Su-Min’s vision of a modern and romantic wedding came to life in such a simple but elegant way. There was hints of gold everywhere and just the perfect amount of sparkle. She wore a stunning Maggie Sottero dress and her bridesmaids complimented her in beautiful blush coloured dresses. Edric looked mighty dapper in his navy blue suit while his groomsmen rocked out in grey suits.

Overall, it was probably the most fun I’ve had at a wedding thus far even though I was working the event you can feel all the love and joy radiating in the room for this lovely couple! There was so much laughter in the room the entire night, a couple tears and a whole lot of love. These are the weddings that make what I do so special as I have the honour to document it all for years to come. Thanks again for trusting me to do what I love and here’s to wishing you both a lifetime of happiness and laughter! (Brrrrrap!)

The second I stepped foot on the Spadina Museum grounds – I feel in love. It has this vintage romantic feel to it that just made it a perfect venue for a simple wedding ceremony. The Spadina House is often called “Toronto’s Downton Abbey” and fittingly so. The structures on site are so well kept you would not believe that some were built as early as the 1850s. Mariko and Nelson wanted to use this as a backdrop to seal their lifetime vows to each other in front of their closest friends and family. They held a very intimate ceremony under the shade of a large tree in the gardens behind the main house. I’m very honoured to have been able to witness their special day as a second shooter for Cari Zhu and experiencing this little gem in the heart of Toronto.

Below are some of the highlights from their beautiful ceremony.

Here’s the thing about traditional Asian weddings – they’re early, really early! The bride had a make-up role call for 5:30AM so we were up by 3:00AM to make sure we were packed and got to her on time. The whole week it was calling for thunderstorms but Cathy and Terence lucked out and the rain didn’t start until we finished the last family group photo!

Cathy and Terence had their traditional Chinese tea ceremony at their respective parents houses’ for their immediate family in the morning.  The rest of their relatives also participated in the traditional Chinese tea ceremony at the Shangri La Markham right before the reception started. They had their closest family and friends witness as they made their vows and promises to each other at Markham Museum. Not only did the bride look stunning in all four (YES, you read that right! FOUR!) gowns but she is also super crafty! All the reception centrepieces, props and decor was pretty much all DIY! (Cathy, I think you have a business opportunity here.) She is so crafty and I’m still amazed by all the work she put into the day’s details on top of all the usual planning that is involved with a wedding. Koodos to you, girl! The evening was full of laughs and great entertainment as the bride and groom surprised the audience was a duet performance of “A Whole New World” and the bridal party surprised the bride and groom with a performance of a Chinese love song.

Here’s to a lifetime of laughter and surprises! Congrats again Cathy and Terence!

Wedding Photography – Diana and Shay – Todmorden Mills Toronto

I had the honour and pleasure of capturing Diana and Shaland’s special day at Todmorden Mills in Toronto this past June. This wedding, planned by Near + Dear Events, combined the perfect amount of rustic and elegance to bring Diana’s vision to life. Set in a the lush Don Valley River neighbourhood, this unique venue offered beautiful greenery for back-drops to contrast with the clean and crisp white walls of the gallery where the ceremony and reception were held. This wedding was a special one for me – it was not only my first time shooting a wedding but also shooting a wedding for a dear friend of mines. I met Diana just under ten years ago at a Cineplex theatre. (Yes, I made popcorn for a living once upon a time!) Almost ten years have flown by and there are so many things that have occurred in both our lives but one thing stands unchanged – we are always there for each other. There was that much more pressure to ensure that the the photos turned out to the best of my ability not only as a photographer but as a friend. I think this is the best gift I can ever give to these two lovely people – timeless moments hopefully they can treasure for the rest of their lives.

Congrats again to the happy couple!
